Faith, Race, and Endocrine Health: Why Trusted Communities Hold the Key Most people have never heard of the endocrine system, yet it shapes nearly every part of daily life. This network of glands makes hormones, the chemical messengers that control blood sugar, energy, weight, sleep, mood, and how the body handles stress. When something goes wrong, it can lead to diabetes, thyroid disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and other conditions. At K-Nation Group and The Genius Center, we work where faith, education, economic empowerment, and community health meet. Endocrine health is one of the clearest examples of why that work matters.

The Gap Is Real Endocrine conditions do not affect every community in the same way. According to the Endocrine Society, diabetes rates among US adults are: - 14.7% of American Indian and Alaska Native adults - 12.5% of Hispanic and Latino adults - 11.7% of Black adults - 7.5% of White adults The Endocrine Society also reports that Black patients tend to have more complications and deaths from diabetes, even when they get the condition at a similar rate as other groups. Research shows these gaps are mostly not about genetics. They are tied to access to care, environment, and the long-term effects of unequal treatment. Everyday products can also play a role. One study found 45 chemicals linked to hormone disruption or asthma in hair products commonly used by Black women. Researchers are still learning what these exposures mean over time. Still, the finding shows why communities need clear, honest health information.

Why Faith Communities Matter For generations, churches and faith communities have been places of trust, support, and action. Research shows they can be powerful partners in health: - In one church-based program, participants were much more likely to lose weight than those who did not take part. - In Detroit, people who joined church-based diabetes support groups saw their blood sugar improve. - Studies of Black church members found deep distrust of the medical system alongside a strong desire to keep their communities healthy. The lesson is simple. People do better when they learn and grow together. Research from the Jackson Heart Study found that social support and strong networks are linked to better health outcomes.

Our Approach We bring people together. Our convening work connects faith leaders, healthcare professionals, community organizations, educators, and families around the issues that affect them most. We believe that: - Health information should be clear, accurate, and easy to understand. - Trusted community spaces can open doors that systems alone cannot. - Families should feel confident asking questions and speaking up for their health. - Lasting change happens when communities and experts work side by side. Through this work, we help turn awareness into understanding, and understanding into action.

Moving Forward Together Closing health gaps takes more than information. It takes trust, partnership, and a seat at the table for the communities most affected. K-Nation Group and The Genius Center are committed to building those tables and inviting others to join. If you lead a congregation, health organization, school, or community group and want to work with us, we would love to connect. Reach out through our contact page to start the conversation.
